Employee Benefits

In addition to group health insurance, WNC Health Insurance offers a complete menu of employer paid and voluntary benefits for your employees including life, short and long term disability, dental, vision, critical illness and accident insurance.  Even if you do not offer group health insurance, you can establish a group benefit program with any combination of ancillary benefit plans.

Life Insurance

Group life insurance is an essential component of a comprehensive employee benefit plan.  The premiums are very affordable and all plans include a guaranteed issue limit, guaranteeing a minimum level of life insurance to all employees without medical underwriting.  Employees can purchase additional coverage with evidence of insurability up to the issue limit of the plan.

Example:  A group of six employees is eligible for $ 15,000 in life insurance with guaranteed issue.  The plan limit is $ 100,000; each employee may apply for up to $ 85,000 in additional coverage with evidence of insurability.

Short Term Disability

A typical group short term disability plan pays a weekly benefit equivalent to 60% of the employee's pre-disability salary. The elimination period (a period of time of time after a qualifying disability event when no benefits are paid) can vary from zero to fourteen days and can be different periods depending if the disability originated from a sickness or an accident. Group short term disability can also include a maternity event, which makes these plans very popular with female employees. The premium for a group short term disability plan is typically shared between the employer and employee. Many employers pair these plans with a group long term disability plan to create a truly comprehensive disability program.

Long Term Disability

A typical group long term disability plan pays a monthly benefit equivalent to 60% of the employee's pre-disability salary. The elimination period (a period of time of time after a qualifying disability event when no benefits are paid) for most plans is 90 days. The benefit period is typically to age 65. In most cases, long term disability insurance benefits are taxable. This can reduce the actual money that an employee receives to less than 50% of their pre-disability income. A supplemental disability policy purchased by the employee can bridge this tax gap. Benefits from a supplemental policy are tax free.

Dental Insurance

I recommend dental plans that include:

  • 100% preventive coverage including two cleanings per year
  • 80% for fillings and other basic procedures
  • 50% for crowns and oral surgery

The annual benefit maximums for these plans can range from $ 750 to $ 2500. Most companies select a plan with a $ 1000 or $ 1500 annual benefit maximum. It is possible to select two different dental plans, establish one plan as the base benefit and allow your employees to "buy up" to a richer plan. Some dental plans include a "roll-over" feature, allowing a portion of unused benefits to be added to the plan maximum for the following year.

Dental plans are available as a voluntary or a company paid benefit with or without employee shared funding.

Vision Insurance

Vision insurance typically includes a benefit for annual exams and a co-pay for materials (contacts, frames and lenses). Vision plans can be company paid with or without shared funding or voluntary.
